FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I don’t think I’m fit – can I still take classes?

You don’t need to be fit.  That’s our job – to get you fit.  We start everyone at the beginner level.  You will build on your basic skills.

I’ve taken martial arts and/or boxing classes before.  Do I have to start at the beginner level?

Everyone starts as a beginner.  This way we can evaluate your skills and fitness level.  Every martial art has their own style and technique and the process must be treated with respect.

Is there a belt system or grading system in muay thai?

In true muay thai, there is no belt system.  It is said "your belt is in the ring".  Some more commercialized schools have begun grading systems (armbands, t-shirt colors or muay thai shorts) to attract students and boost enrollment.  This is a new practice and what we feel is strictly a business decision - not one that represents the old style and culture of authentic muay thai. We will stay with the tradition of a no belt system.

Can I train whether or not I want to fight in the ring?

Yes.  Most of our students are participating for fitness and fun.  You will learn from the first class -- footwork and defense.  You will be working with the trainers on heavy bags and will work up to sparring with partners.  If you choose to go into competition, starting as a beginner will give you the fundamentals to take your training to the competitive level.

I hear people say they do Tae Bo.  Is that like Muay Thai?

Uhhhh...... NO!    Tae Bo is an exercise -- an aerobic exercise.  No matter what people claim, you are not going to be able to defend yourself after a Tae Bo class.  Muay Thai is a martial art -- you will learn to fight.  Tae Bo is an aerobic class -- you will learn to exercise.

When are classes?  How much are classes?

Classes and private lessons are available.  Classes begin at $90/month for two times a week and go from there depending on how often you train.  Call Tony Mosley (614-286-6686) to inquire about private lessons or to arrange an appointment to come in.  Babysitting is available for certain classes.  Check our schedule here.

Do I need special equipment?

We have equipment for you to use.  Most students buy their own gloves, shin pads, etc. after a few classes.  Ohio Muay Thai has equipment, t-shirts and more for sale.

What do I need to start?

Just comfortable clothing (shorts or sweats, t-shirt), a towel, water and a good attitude.  There is no uniform to buy.
